The College of Agriculture at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), of the Philippines and the University of Copenhagen, Denmark has received research grant to implement the Climate Smart Rice Research Project which is expected to kick start in April, 2020. As part of capacity building, the project intends to recruit Master (2) and PhD (2) students who will focus on Crop Improvement (breeding for improved rice tolerance to flooding and salinity) as well as Chemistry and Management of flooded and salt-affected soils.
Applications from qualified and interested Tanzanians are hereby invited to fill the FOUR positions (i.e. 2 Masters and 2 PhDs) in the fields specified above. The scholarships will ONLY be considered for applicants who have secured admission or submitted application for admission into Master and PhD programmes at Sokoine University of Agriculture. Those who are interested in PhD (Crop Improvement) should possess MSc. in Plant breeding/Crop improvement or MSc. Crop Science from a recognized University while those interested in the Chemistry and Management of flooded and salt affected soils should possess MSc. in Soil Science, Soil Science and Land Management or Soil Chemistry. Applicants for MSc. scholarship should possess BSc. in Agriculture General, Horticulture or BSc. Agronomy from a recognized university. Experience in working on rice will be an added advantage for the applicants. Females are highly encouraged to apply.
In order to qualify for scholarship consideration, you should:
- Apply for admission into Master or PhD programme at Sokoine University of Agriculture. Information on procedure and admission requirements is available on SUA website at https://www.sua.ac.tz/announcements/applications-admission-higher-degrees-academic-year-20202021. For those who have already applied for admission OR those who were offered admission during the last academic year (2019/2020) should NOT apply again but submit evidence of application/admission with their letters when applying for scholarship;
- Submit an application letter for scholarship consideration to the Project Leader at SUA S. Nchimbi-Msolla at nchimbi@sua.ac.tz and copy to drpgs@sua.ac.tz. The letter should be accompanied by evidence of submission of application for admission into Master or PhD programme OR evidence of admission into Master or PhD programme at SUA which is still active. For PhD scholarships, the applicant MUST also submit his/her curriculum vitae, a Concept note based on the area of focus (maximum 2,000 words), scanned copies of transcripts and certificates from recognized Universities.
The deadline for scholarship application is TWO weeks from the date of this advertisement. Only shortlisted applicants for PhD will be invited for interview, while for MSc. Applicants, only successful candidates will be contacted.
