Description
This position is responsible for the monitoring, management and protection of water resources in commercial, environmental and academic settings in Kilombero landscape in Tanzania. The Ecohydrologist will be responsible for activity design, data collection, storage, analyses, and dissemination of all water related information. The Ecohydrologist will be responsible for organizing trainings and working with water user committees and community members to improve water resources management and restore the degraded catchments within the landscape.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
- Work with Local Government Authorities, Basin Water Offices, Private Sectors and local communities on water resource issues.
- Support the improvement of watershed planning and management in Kilombero Landscape.
- Foster ecosystem restoration and/or rehabilitation and habitat conservation using Ecosystem based Approaches (EbA).
- Enable communities and other relevant stakeholders for decentalized management of water resources and ecosystems, wildlife, and the related biodiversity.
- Facilitate a community-centered and holistic approach to water resources management and conservation, including ensuring the operation and capacity building of Water User Associations and other water user groups.
- Assist with the development of water user agreements and with the formation or strengthening of water user associations.
- Train community groups/water use committees on monitoring protocols and River Healthy assessment.
- Promoteand/or invent water use efficient ways in agriculture and other consumptive uses among farmers
- Support the project planning processes and coordinate respective fundraising activities in collaboration with the Program Design Team.
- Facilitate respective projects evaluations and ensure implementation of agreed recommendations.
- Represent AWF in strategic forums.
- Any other relevant duties that will be assigned by Landscape Manager.
Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science/Environmental Studies/ Water
- Resources or another field directly related to hydrology. Masters an advantage.
- At least 3 years’ experience, training and knowledge in the field of freshwater conservation monitoring
- Demonstrated knowledge and mastery of global standards and practices for conservation including in ecosystem management plan, rights-based approaches and integrated conservation and development.
- Acceptable level of knowledge of local laws and regulations governing research and other hydrological work in Tanzania.
- Genuine respect for the skills and perspectives of communities, partner organizations and the private sector.
- Good report writing skills and working knowledge of computers (in Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) and professional applications such Arc GIS,
- Proficiency in both English (spoken and written) and Kiswahili is required.
