The newly established Abdulrahman Al-Sumait University (SUMAIT University) requires to recruit a Vice Chancellor and two Deputy Vice Chancellors to be based in Zanzibar. SUMAIT University is sponsored by Direct Aid, an international non-governmental organization operating in the United Republic of Tanzania with Headquarters in Kuwait. 

SUMAIT University is a transformation from the former College of Education established in 1997 and acquired interim registration in 1998 by the Higher Education Accreditation Council. In 2006 the College of Education was transformed into University College of Education Zanzibar and registered with Tanzania Commission for Universities (formerly the Higher Education Accreditation Council).After attaining fully University status in July 2014 the new University has autonomy and hence requires the appointment of top leadership as follows:-

Vice Chancellor: ONE POST

Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics, Research and Consultancy: ONE POST

Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance: ONE POST

Vice Chancellor (Vacancy No: VC 1/SUMAIT 2017)

The Vice Chancellor is the Chief Executive Officer of the University and has overall responsibility for academic and administrative leadership. The two Deputy Vice Chancellors are his/her immediate assistants. The Vice Chancellor is expected to develop educational frameworks and policies and take ownership of the First Five Years University’s Strategic Plan in order to achieve the set strategic goals.

Qualifications (Vice Chancellor)

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or equivalent degree from a recognized University.
  • Must have attained the rank of Professor/Associate Professor with at least seven (7) years’ experience in a Senior Academic Position and Management.
  • Has an outstanding internationally recognized record of scholarship and academic leadership as evidenced by extensive publications in scholarly, refereed journals and books.
  • Has a track record of successful University academic, administrative and financial management.
  • Has capacity to promote learning, research and community service in a competitive environment.
  • Has understanding of and commitment to academic excellence. ? Be of high ethical standards, integrity and professionalism.

Deputy Vice Chancellors (Qualifications)

  • As outlined for Vice Chancellor.
  • Working experience of at least five (5) at a Senior Academic or Management position is desirable.
  • The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics, Research and Consultancy) must have the following additional requirements:
  • Possess relevant knowledge on national laws and policies on education as well as financial planning which will have an added advantage.
  • The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration and Finance) must have the following additional requirement:
  • Candidates who possess additional qualifications such as MBA, CPA or other relevant qualifications in administration, management and finance will have an added advantage.

Successful applicants are expected to:

  • Provide leadership and direction in policy formulation and institutional planning;
  • Implement University development plans including human capital development;
  • Promote a good labor relations environment within the University;
  • Have oversight of student’s services, students welfare and academic support for students;
  • Advice the Council on a range of key performance areas including the implementation of University Strategy Plan;
  • Have direct oversight of day-to-day operations of core education activities, resource management, quality assurance and compliance.

General Terms and Conditions

(1) A successful candidate shall be appointed for an initial term not exceeding four (4) years and renewable for a further term not exceeding four (4) years depending on performance.

(2) The posts carry competitive remuneration package commensurate with qualifications and experience, which includes a basic salary, housing or housing allowance, medical cover as par the University medical scheme, leave allowance, official transport and gratuity at the end of the contract.
