VLIR-UOS PhD Scholarship Opportunity in Embedded/Mobile-Based Machine Learning at NM-AIST for 2019/2
General Description
VLIR-UOS PhD Scholarship Opportunity in Embedded/Mobile-Based Machine Learning at NM-AIST for 2019/2020 Academic Year
VLIR-UOS programme at Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Arusha, Tanzania, is announcing a PhD scholarship in embedded/mobile-based machine learning. The VLIR-UOS program at NM-AIST is aimed at strengthening the NM-AIST’s capacity to conduct research in artificial intelligence (AI) among others for solving societal challenges. Machine and deep learning are subsets of AI that allow predictions to be made from data, and they are behind some of the most exciting technological innovations including self-driving cars and accurate image and speech recognition. In Africa, AI can be used for prediction of disease outbreaks and severe weather, therefore allowing societies to take preventative measures.
The VLIR-UOS Program is seeking a PhD candidate to work on developing low-power computer vision machine learning models that can efficiently run on embedded or mobile devices. The candidate will be required to show the accuracy and power usage of the developed models when executed on the embedded or mobile device for image-based prediction tasks such as detecting plant diseases from images. The PhD will be a sandwich programme between the University of Antwerp in Belgium and the NM-AIST. The student is expected to spend half of the PhD time in Belgium and the remaining half in Tanzania. The scholarship covers tuition fees, travel between Tanzania and Belgium, research costs and a monthly stipend when the candidate is in Belgium.
