In order to ensure that the capacities of the education, health, community and other stakeholders are harnessed for effective school health and nutrition, a school health and nutrition strategy and guidelines have been developed to address the gaps, harmonize and strengthen existing SHN interventions and serve as a tool for the integration and reinforcement of broader SHN interventions. UNICEF has supported the government of Zanzibar to develop school health and nutrition strategy and guidelines, in which a series of stakeholder consultation workshops were held, and draft documents developed. The remaining work is to finalize the existing drafts of the SHN strategy and guidelines that are currently in an advanced draft stage.
The main purpose of this consultancy is to review, finalize and ensure high quality Zanzibar School Health and Nutrition Strategy and guidelines.
How can you make a difference?
The consultant will work under the supervision of the Nutrition officer, with overall guidance from Chief of ZFO and the Chief of nutrition. The consultant shall work in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training and the Ministry of Health with technical support from UNICEF. The consultant will have to liaise with MoEVT for the technical support and coordination of the work.
The following deliverables are expected
- The consultant shall review all the documents that were made during different processes of developing school health and nutrition strategy and guidelines including inception reports, reports from stakeholder engagement as well as drafts of the SHN strategy and guidelines.
- The consultant shall ensure the application of SHN theoretical framework such as FRESH, health schools, nutrition friendly school initiative and that the SHN strategy and guidelines are aligned and developed around the same theoretical framework.
- Ensure the SHN strategy is written in a strategic language and structure.
- The consultant shall ensure that the strategy includes a coordination mechanism and structure that will be most effective and feasible for SHN interventions.
- Contact stakeholders to gather any relevant information that may be missing in the draft documents.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
- A national consultant who has done a similar work (national strategy and guidelines) in Tanzania or in other countries.
- Advanced university degree in Public Health, Environmental health and nutrition
- 5-10 years of progressive work experience particularly public health, school health and nutrition programming, theoretical frameworks and approaches for development of strategies and guidelines.
- High quality writing skills, with proved experience in writing similar documents or other national documents.
- Strong analytical skills demonstrated in dealing with assessment and design of strategies/guidelines for complex health programmes.
- Written and spoken English is required, basic knowledge of Kiswahili is an added advantage; and fluency in English and Kiswahili is required

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
